Crystal Care Guide
At Yuna we only source natural crystals and just like nature, they each have their own quirks. Some love a sunny windowsill, while others prefer a shady corner. Some are perfectly happy near water, while others would much rather stay dry.
Here’s a simple guide to keeping your crystals beautiful for years to come.
Crystals That Prefer the Shade
Some crystals can fade, bleach or change colour when exposed to direct sunlight for long periods.
Keep these crystals away from sunny windowsills or prolonged direct sunlight:
- Amethyst
- Ametrine
- Fluorite
- Rose Quartz
- Smoky Quartz
- Citrine
- Celestite
- Aquamarine
- Sodalite
- Aventurine
- Kunzite
A little sunshine isn't necessarily a problem, but prolonged, intense direct sunlight can gradually affect the colour of some stones. If in doubt, display your crystal somewhere with indirect light.
Tip: Your crystal doesn't need to sunbathe to be beautiful. A softly lit shelf is perfect.
Crystals That Don't Love Water
Not every crystal enjoys a bath. Some are soft, porous, water-soluble or easily damaged by moisture.
Avoid soaking or regularly exposing these crystals to water:
- Selenite / Satin Spar
- Halite
- Selenite varieties
- Lepidolite
- Malachite
- Pyrite
- Hematite
- Lapis Lazuli
- Angelite
- Calcite
- Fluorite
Some of these can dissolve, become brittle, develop a dull surface, rust/oxidise or otherwise deteriorate when exposed to water.
For these stones, use a soft, dry cloth to gently remove dust instead.
***A little note about cleansing***
You don't need water to cleanse your crystals. Moonlight, sound, smoke where appropriate, intention or simply placing them somewhere peaceful are gentler alternatives.
Crystals That Don't Like Heat or Fire
Please keep crystals away from candles, fireplaces, incense flames, burners and other direct heat sources.
Heat can cause crystals to:
- Crack or fracture
- Change colour
- Dehydrate
- Become brittle
- Explode or break suddenly if heated and then exposed to water
There are some crystals that should never be exposed to heat as they can become toxic or decompose when exposed to high temperatures, such as:
- Bumblebee Jasper (release toxic fumes when exposed to flames)
- Selenite (decompose and releases toxic fumes when exposed to heat/fire)
- Malachite (decomposes)
Crystals can contain inclusions, fractures or moisture, and heating them isn't the same as simply displaying them. We recommend keeping your crystals and candles as separate little rituals.
Fragile & Delicate Crystals
Some crystals are naturally softer or more fragile than others (low mohs). They can scratch, chip, flake or break if dropped or knocked against harder surfaces.
Handle these with a little extra love:
- Selenite / Satin Spar
- Fluorite
- Calcite
- Halite
- Lepidolite
- Celestite
- Kyanite
- Malachite
- Opal
- Apatite
- Angelite
Everyday Crystal Care
For most crystals, keeping them happy is wonderfully simple
Display: Keep them somewhere safe where they won't be knocked over.
Cleaning: Use a soft dry cloth or a air low gun on harder crystals to gently remove dust unless you know the crystal is water-safe.
Storage: Keep softer stones separate from harder crystals to prevent scratches.
Sunlight: If you're unsure, choose indirect light.
Water: If you're unsure, keep it dry.
Heat: Keep all crystals away from direct flame and excessive heat.
Handling: Treat natural crystals gently. Small chips, inclusions, lines and colour variations are often part of their natural character.
Most importantly...
Your crystal doesn't need a complicated ritual to be special.
Whether you keep yours beside your bed, on your desk, tucked into a pocket or displayed among your favourite objects, let it become part of the little rituals that make your space feel like you.
Handle with intention. Display with love. And let nature do what nature does best - simply be.
Please note: This is a general care guide. Crystal varieties, treatments and inclusions can affect how individual specimens react to light, water and heat. When in doubt, choose the gentlest care option.
